Share your memories with family

One of the main barriers family historians face is sharing information. Most of us have family all over the States and even World, and for my Grandma she would have to rely on snail mail, and then towards the end email. Which in my experience is the least reliable source of sharing your families history. My Grandma was always forwarding everything she received, so I had set up an account with Hotmail and Netscape to receive all her forwards. I thought that I would have access forever to those files. I was very wrong, both servers deleted everything. Now I back things up, and have found a more reliable resource for sharing, a way that I can instantly save on a thumb drive. Dropbox is the best way to share files from your computer to a family members, and it is free. You would zip your photos, or pedigree chart and place it in the file you are sharing through Dropbox with your family.

  1. What an awesome way to share with your family. Thank you for a good resource.

  2. Very interesting. I prefer good ol’ fashioned Facebook because not all my relatives are internet savvy. At least they know how to right-click and save from my personal FB albums now. Haha. Thanks for the review anyway dearie!

  3. Drop box is awesome and I love how you can sync it with all your computers, tablets and smartphones. By the way I love your blog, I have always been interested in doing more family research.

  4. I LOVE dropbox – I use it all the time for work, but I don’t think I’ve ever used it for anything in my personal life. It’s a good idea to use it for memory-sharing!

  5. My hubby just started using this! Not for the same thing, but Dropbox works great for different things. I’m fascinated with people who do the genealogy thing–my second cousin is really into this and knows everything about everyone. πŸ™‚

    • Thank you for visiting Kirsten. My friend introduced me to dropbook for scrapbooking. It was easier than I thought it would be. As for Genealogy, I started when I was a little girl, my Grandma, her Aunt, and my mom would take us everywhere to gather information, get photos scanned, even to cemeteries to learn more about family. It has become second nature for me, and now I am the family historian in the Family. πŸ™‚

  6. I’m not sure if I would use dropbox right now but I do love family hisittory! I bet it’s a tool that my dad could make good use of. πŸ™‚

  7. I had never heard of this site before. I might have to think about it. I usually use snapfish but this looks like a lot less time consuming!

  8. I signed up for an account a while ago but have never used it. Now I have to dig that account info back out. I have so many family pictures that I have scanned that I would literally sit on the floor and cry if anything happened to those files or to the real pictures. Thanks for sharing.

  9. I just started to use Dropbox this year just to keep my own items in it. But this is great info on how to share with others.

I am working on my family history as my grandma life prior to her marriage to my grandpa has been a mystery. I have. found quite a bit out about my family from the research like she was the youngest of all of her siblings and there was a lot of them. I will have o remember how to share with others using Dropbox for future pictures I want to share with family. Thanks.

I have just started using Project Life as a way to store memories offline as I ahve heard so many stories about precious family pictures lost du to no backing up. Dropbox is an excellent idea (and maybe Flickr for precious pictures) you are SO RIGHT to advocate safe storage – Someone once said we have a generation of people with no family hieritage because Mum lost/deleted the pictures of the kids when they were small. BACK UP guys – use Dropbox NOW!

  11. So sad to hear you lost some of your precious family memories! I created a Drop Box account a while ago, but have honestly never really used it. Thanks for the great reminder πŸ™‚

  16. I’ve heard of Dropbox a couple of times before but have never really taken the time to check it out! Based on what you wrote, it looks really easy to use. I think I’ll give it a try soon!
